Styling Tips: Matching Your Dining Room Rug with Furniture and Decor

Dining room rugs not only add comfort, warmth, style, and color to a room, but they can also frame your dining table and add visual appeal to the entire room. A rug is a soft piece of furniture that covers the area under and around the table, grounding the table and dining chairs. Here are six rules for choosing the perfect dining room rug. There are a few important things to consider when choosing the best rug for your dining room. So, let’s talk about six tips for choosing a matching dining room rug with furniture and decor.

Arranging Dining Room Furniture

Without a Rug Before adding a rug to your dining room, place and rearrange all of your dining room furniture so that everything is arranged the way you want it. This makes it easy to measure and choose the right rug for your room. Our dining room is very open, so choosing the right size was very important. If I had done this before buying my first rug, I could have saved myself a huge mistake!

Finding The Perfect Dining Room Rug Size

Here are some good rules for matching a dining room rug with furniture and decor. Measure your dining table and add 20-30 inches. You now have a rug that is the perfect size for your dining room. Some people say that to get the correct size rug, you need to measure your table by the inlaid leaves and then add 15 to 30 inches. This rule says that it depends on how often you eat with the tabletop spread out.

If you just stretch out the table and eat, the carpet may feel oppressive. We probably use extended tables more than most people. However, I decided to measure the table without a sheet, but the rug is very comfortable. If you are like me and want to measure carpet, use the upper end of the measurement spectrum. The rug extends approximately 25 inches on all sides from the long side of the table.

Rug Shape

The shape of a dining room rug is basically determined by three factors.

  1. Dining Room Shape
  2. Dining Table Shape
  3. Personal Preference

First, let’s talk about rectangular rugs. Let’s. This is the most common shape of a rug in a dining room. No wonder rectangular rugs are the most popular shape. They are usually rectangular or square, making them easily visible in most dining rooms. With a rectangular carpet, you can use any shaped table. Oval rugs look beautiful in rectangular rooms as long as the room and rug are wide enough to follow the rule of thumb that when a person pulls out a chair to sit, the rug is on top of it for matching dining room rug with furniture and decor.

An oval carpet doesn’t look very good on a round table because of the different proportions. Use an oval rug for a rectangular table. A round rug in the dining room can be very chic and unexpected in a good way if you consider a few things. A round rug looks great under a round table in a rectangular or square room. But not asymmetrical or round rooms. It’s not very interesting to have a round table in a round room and a round carpet under the table. A square rug looks great on a round table! Works best in small rooms.

Let The Room Breathe

The rug should not be so large that it covers the entire dining room. Let the edges of the room “breathe.” Ideally, there should be at least 6 to 18 inches of floor clearance throughout the room. This will determine the dining area and accompanying furniture. However, if the room is small, make sure the floor is at least slightly visible. Experts recommend choosing the carpet pattern and color scheme first and then designing it to match the room.

This is great advice, but what if you already have all the furniture? Then you are just like me matching a dining room rug with furniture and decor. We installed carpet and bought a new dining table and chairs! So, I looked for a rug that would coordinate with the colors of the room and chose a large geometric pattern that wouldn’t compete with the patterns already in the dining room.

Choose The Carpet Color According To Your Color Palette

Then, mix and match the rug’s colors and patterns with other rugs in your home. I cannot stress enough how important this is. We all want a beautiful and harmonious home. When choosing a rug for your dining room, you should consider the color palette and style of the rest of your home.

In the photos above (top two), you can see my patterned jute living room rug. I also chose a living room rug to match the dining rug.  You may also want to consider choosing a brighter pattern that matches your decor and can be placed under the dining table to hide food spills. Dark colors are also great for hiding dirt .Imagine a rug that fits the floor like a piece of art. A rug can change the entire atmosphere of a room! Replacing the rug really changed the look of the entire dining room.

Choose A Low Pile Or Flat Rug For Your Dining Room.

I’m the queen of texture, but a heavily textured rug may not be the best choice for your dining room rug. Low pile or relatively smooth carpets are best. A shag rug or a rug with a rough texture may not be the best choice for under your dining table. However, a plain weave rug is a good choice. There are also many sisal rugs and natural fiber rugs that are perfect for your dining room. My personal favorites are all the great new indoor/outdoor rugs and Ruggables on the market.

Indoor and Outdoor Rugs and Ruggables are easy to clean, have a smooth surface, are durable, and are available in stunning colors and patterns Many are suitable for even the most formal and elegant dining rooms. It is extremely stain-resistant. Just wipe up spills, crumbs, and other messes. When the carpet gets too dirty (I have five dirty grandchildren), I throw it in the washer and dryer. So, if you have messy kids eating at the table, you might want to consider getting a Ruggable.

Ruggables

It is a two-carpet system. The bottom padding is waterproof, and the top blanket attaches like Velcro, so it’s very thin. If you look closely at our carpet, you will see some slight wrinkles. Looking at these photos, I simply moved the top layer of carpet to the bottom layer, and the wrinkles were gone. It’s so easy! If you like coziness, choose a low-pile carpet for your dining room, such as the Oriental carpet. There are some beautiful traditional and non-traditional oriental rugs on the market.

More Tips For Choosing A Dining Room Rug

Here are some helpful tips.

  1. No problem if you don’t have a rug – be sure to line the chair legs with felt pads.
  2. A round table is sufficient. You don’t need a round carpet. Measure the widest part of the table and add 15 to 25 inches for a  rug.
  3. Cut-out carpet edges make excellent dining room rugs. Just staple the edges.
  4. Always use a rug pad.
  5. Dining room sideboards, cupboards, bar carts, and other decorative accents do not need to rest on top of the rug. They stand firm on the ground.
