Discover the Art of Elegance: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Curtains for Your Living Room

Wondering how to find curtains for the living room? A lot of our time at home is spent in this area, so it’s an important decision as part of making an interior to love now and into the future.

Window treatment ideas have to complement the room’s style, whether classic or modern. They have a practical as well as an aesthetic aspect, so your curtain ideas have to fulfill all your needs.

In this guide, designers and curtain experts explain how to choose curtains for a living room that will have a lasting style, making the task of picking a pleasure.

How To Choose Curtains For A Living Room?

Where do you start when choosing curtains that work with your living room ideas? ‘Everyone should think about the practicality first – are the window treatments entirely for the aesthetics?’ states interior designer Katie Davis of Katie Davis Creation. ‘Do we need them for privacy? Does the room get a lot of light also shine a glare on the screens? Also, think about the furniture and flow placing in a living space – you may need to do shades rather than drapes if a sofa or walkway is in that area. Consider about how you live first and then play with the color and pattern.’

Decide Between Stationary And Opening Curtains

Consider how your living room curtains need to work. Are they required to be opened or closed, or will they remain stationary?

If drapery does not need to close? ‘Consider stationary panels on a pretty French return rod,’ says Maggie Griffin, founder and principal designer of Maggie Griffin Design. The given rods have a beautifully simple design with no finials – the rod basically returns to the wall at each end. ‘The panels can coordinate with the other fabrics in the room, and provide softness to the area,’ adds Maggie.

Bear in mind the fabric sizes that will be required depending on what type of curtains you go for. ‘If you want the curtains to continue to be pretty and stationary. After this curtain width is not as much of an issue, however, if you want to be in a position to open and close the curtains, it’s good to make sure there is enough width to be for the entire window,’ says Kelly Simpson, leading director of design & new ideas at Budget Blinds, experts in blinds, shades, shutters, and drapes.

Focus On Light Control And Privacy

Window results need to be chosen with the need for light control and privacy in mind. Curtains or blinds may fulfill these roles, while the curtains with which they are coupled to dress the window are purely decorative. However, curtains may need to contribute equally.

If you wish to let light into the living room, gently diffuse it, think of sheers or light cotton curtains, or go for somewhat heavier linens. ‘For a more traditional living room, we decided to go for sheers to give the space softness and height, but also still let light in,’ says Aileen Warren of Houston-origin Jackson Warren Interiors.

Consider heavier fabrics, such as velvet, to create privacy or darken a living room. Darker curtains’ linings will also properly block light.

Consider Fit

Ready-made curtains come in given sizes, which may provide a good fit for your windows. ‘If you have very large windows, consider investing in custom drapery made to fit the prooper measurements of the window,’ says Kelly Simpson.

Of course, going bespoke can have other upsides. ‘Draperies allow you to make a gorgeous and customized style that right away elevates a room,’ says Kelly.

Take Color And Pattern Into Account

When choosing curtain colors for a room, such as the living room, consider the other things in the space.

‘Curtain color completely is reliant on the room – the rug, the lighting, the furniture,’ states interior designer Aileen Warren. Utilize a color wheel to plan the palette for the room, including things like the curtains, properly.

Consider patterns as well as plains for the inside. ‘Pattern is great when you want to brinh visual interest to a room because perhaps your upholstery is solid or the client likes a bit of whimsy,’ states Aileen.

‘For a more traditional place, we chose a subtle stripe fabric to work on pattern and liven up a solid sofa.’

You may want the curtains to be barely there, on the other hand. ‘For a project with a super amazing view, we did white linen cloth so they would disappear,’ said Aileen.

Which Type Of Curtains Are Best For A Living Room?

The best kind of curtains for a living room should be determined according to really good factors and aesthetic ones. The need for light control and privacy would influence the fabric desire: sheers and semi-sheers will let light in, but they filter it; heavy fabrics and black linings will block light and prevent the room from being overlooked if the curtains are drawn.

Curtain color and whether they’re patterned or plain should take the color of walls, carpets, furniture, and other furnishings into account. In addition, it will also depend on whether you want the curtains to be a critical point or more understated.

Budget will also affect choice, especially if the room has a lot of windows. ‘A good budget saving is plain, neutral linen and adding a leading edge trim,’ suggests Allison Warren of Jackson Warren Interiors.

Should Curtains In The Living Room Reach The Floor?

For the most stylish effect, living room curtains must touch the floor. Even if the window itself doesn’t extend to the floor. If furniture placement, such as a walkway through the room, makes this difficult, go for shades rather than short curtains, which could potentially have a dated look in a living room.

There are two other choices for curtains that touch the floor. If they need to be opened and closed frequently, curtains that move a little above the floor can be desirable. For a luxurious look, you might go for curtains long enough to puddle on the floor. Keep in mind that these take arranging and will need more attention when it comes to caring for curtains.
